AVS Video Editor

Simple to follow AVS Video Editor Tutorials to produce creative videos!

Looking for an inexpensive Video Editing Software with some great functionality. Then AVS Video Editor might be the solution.

Yes Microsoft and Apple may have their own versions of video editors, but you will soon find these are limited.

AVS Video Editor should meet most of your needs to create some entertaining videos with some interesting bells and whistles. There is a free version available so you can test drive the software first.

To help you use this package, I have created a number of tutorials listed below. These cover the majority of questions I often get asked. Although the tutorials have been based on version 5.2, there is very little noticeable difference in the functionality to the latest version 8.1.

Note:

  • Watch the tutorial in either HD 720 or HD1080.
  • Although some of the recordings are of an earlier version, these are still useful for the most current version.
  • Before you start any creation, I would also suggest to set up the autosave. You can do this by going into EDIT, SETTINGS, GENERAL – as shown below.

So far so good. If you now select say ‘Web’, you will now see this window:

To post your creation on YouTube, just select “YouTube”. The last screen is the same as before. Now watch the video.

Tutorial 17

A quick tutorial on how to have your video clip starting further along the timeline as opposed having it starting at the beginning.

Tutorial 18

A number of people have asked how to set the duration for adding in a large number of photographs without going into each photograph and changing the duration. Equally the same question has been asked about how to set the transition timing as opposed to changing each one separately. This tutorial shows you how to achieve this.

Tutorial 19

Many people have asked how to use AVS Video Editor without subscribing. This tutorial shows how you can create a 5 minute video for free and without any watermark. If you wish to have a video longer than 5 minutes then you can repeat the last process using Windows movie maker or the equivalent in the Macintoshes’.

If you are looking to use your video in YouTube, you can use the enhanced edit function to remove the first minute of your video. Once in YouTube, go to edit your video and select “Enhancements”. Once in here, use the trim function to remove the first minute as shown below. Remember to save!

Tutorial 20

More on video effects. I have picked out 11 effects that you may find useful. These include:

  • Flip
  • twist
  • Perspective
  • Skew
  • Shift
  • Rotate
  • Resample
  • Zoom
  • Mirror
  • Sharpen
  • Image

Tutorial 21

How to insert additional lines into the timeline i.e. inserting lines so that you can play more than one effect at one time or more than one overlay at one time.

 Here are some common questions.

Q1

Question: How can I remove the black border around the scene of each movie?

Answer: The default aspect ratio is set at 16×9 which is for wide angle viewing. If your video is not wide angle then you will need to change the aspect ration to 4×3. You can do this by going to edit, aspect ratio, 4×3.

Q2

Question: How can I change the brightness, colour and contrast on a video or image?

Answer: Click on the video or image in the main video editor line and select ‘color’. This function can also be selected by clicking on the right hand mouse button and selecting ‘color’. See below:

Q3

Question: How can I zoom in and out of my video or remove the black boarders around the video?

Answer: There are two ways to achieve this and both methods are useful if you are looking to remove black boarders around the video. To do this, you can use the stabilization function or the crop scale function or use both methods.

Click on the video clip and select ‘stabilization’

On opening the window, select ‘stabilize video’ then move the compensation bar accordingly.

Crop scale by clicking the right hand mouse button on the video clip and selecting crop scale? It’s the crop scale slider that zooms in and out

Note: You may also need to change the aspect ratio as shown in question 1 and this only works on videos, not on images.

Q4

Question: How do I have more video effects simultaneously?

Answer: What you need to do is to drag the effects over the video itself and not into the effects timeline. You can add as many as you like. To edit or re-order these, click onto the video, and select the ‘video effect’ button that appears amongst the other buttons above the timeline.

Click on the video and select ‘video effects’ to edit. Here you will be able to see the effects selected.

To activate this function, go to ‘edit’, ‘settings’, ‘edit’ and check the box to ‘allow to add effects directly on the video’.

Q5

Question: How do I fade text in and out.

Answer: When selecting a text type, select an animation and this might do what you are looking for. If you wish to change the animation then go into ‘Edit Text’ and select a fade and fade out animation from the selection at the bottom right hand corner.
